Jesus and the Party Scene

July 31st, 2008

Scripture:
John 2:1–11 — So in Cana of Galilee Jesus did His first miracle. There He showed His glory, and His followers believed in Him. (vs. 11)

Observation:
As a pastor, I get to preside at many weddings. I’m learning that weddings can be a bid deal. Sometimes, they can be a big ordeal. Weddings were an important part of Jewish culture. An entire village or town often participated in the festivities. Jesus performed His first miracle at this wedding in Cana. Why did Jesus attend this wedding? I think the text gives us this answer. In verse two it says, Jesus and His followers were invited to a wedding. It’s significant that common folks in a little town wanted to be with Jesus. Perhaps we miss this side of Christ. Here we see a great miracle. But we see more than that. We see a Savior who loves people. We see a Savior who isn’t rigid and over scheduled. We see our Lord experiencing the freedom to appreciate a fun time and to enjoy a party. And oh, how He livened up that party!

Application:
How long has it been since you accepted an invitation? How long has it been since you were free to be spontaneous? How long has it been since you were able to party? No, not the kind that involves compromise, or coarseness, or obscenity. And why does that come to mind when we think party? We ought to lead the way in fun and laughter and good times. We ought to be the ones leading the way in rejoicing and partying. After all, we a have a Savior. Oh, and by the way, He can do miracles!!!

Prayer:
Lord get us out of our doldrums and over-cramped, over-crowded, schedules. Let us see in our Savior the One who can party! Bless us with lives that mark the moment and revel in special occasions. In it all, let us see and experience Jesus- — the One who desires to do miracles in our midst.
