Where do you rest?
Scripture:
Jeremiah 50:6 — “ My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray and caused them to roam on the mountains. They wandered over mountains and hills and forgot their own resting place.”
Observation:
In this book, God was using Jeremiah to tell his people of their unfaithfulness and the consequences that were to follow. He is using Jeremiah as a light of hope to a people who didn’t see any error in their way and did not think that God would punish. In this chapter, God is actually promising despair for Babylon, the destroyer of his people. God states that his people have been lost and in sin, and that they have forgotten all the goodness that God offers.
Application:
I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite past times (I actually list it as a hobby) is sleeping. I can sleep anytime, anywhere, any weather condition. There just isn’t anything better than a rainy afternoon, a cool, dark room, a feather pillow and a soft blanket. That combo offers a peace, a stillness, a relaxation, a joy, and a comfort that is indescribable. It’s just something about rest that makes me happy! That incommunicable feeling is what God desire for us. He offers a peace, a stillness, and a joy that that fills you up and overflows into your soul spilling out on all around you. God desires for you to simply sit at his feet, resting in his grace, mercy and love reveling in all that he has for you. Who doesn’t want that? Who doesn’t desire that level of rest? Then why do we get lead astray? What daily activities are more important or can give you that feeling of comfort? God calls us to him, to that peace, to that joy, to put away things that distract and to simply come and rest in him.
Prayer:
In my crazy world, Lord, I desire peace and rest. I desire to sit and be still and to breathe you in and yet….I don’t do it. Lord, give me the wisdom to know what is important and the strength to follow through. Lord, help me to not get bogged down in “stuff” but instead enjoy the awesomeness of your love that you desire for me. Prick my spirit and give me a burning desire for this rest that you offer. Allow me to be ever aware that all I do each day flows from this rest that I receive in you. Amen.
