Just Walk Away

September 22nd, 2008

Scripture
“So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything, and followed Him.” Luke 5:11

Observation
It is interesting to me that here the first disciples walked away from everything —including their immediate blessing. Jesus blessed them with a large catch of fish, but if they truly left everything, that means they stepped out of the boats and left the fish wriggling in the nets behind. Materially speaking, their actions nullified the blessing. The miraculous catch did them no good practically. They received no food, no money, nothing from casting their nets on the other side of the boat and pulling in the fish. Jesus, then, performed the miracle for another reason. My guess is that He wanted to show the men a glimpse of who He is. I love the fact that once the men knew who they were dealing with their task simply didn’t matter anymore.

Application
Jesus has proved Himself to me many times. Answered prayers, salvation, companionship… these are all the evidence I need. Still, I can always do better at walking away from everything for the sake of Christ. I don’t usually look at blessings from God as something to put behind me. I receive with a thankful heart and think, “God wants me to have and enjoy this.” The first disciples didn’t think that. The blessing merely pointed them to understand and turn to Jesus. I’m thinking that’s the real point of blessings this morning.

Prayer
Lord, thank you for all the blessings. You have given me more than I could ever deserve or hope for. I see today that you don’t give merely for my pleasure, although I know You’re about that too. Help me today to see through the blessings into You.
