In His Presence

Scripture
“For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” Psalm 84:10
Observation
This Scripture first claims that it is better to spend just one day in the presence of God the Most High King than a thousand anywhere else. It goes on to say that just to stand at the front door of God’s house than to dwell in the tents of the wicked. As I read I began to compare the locations the psalmist included here. If one is standing outside, that means that he or she is exposed to weather conditions, stripped of all comforts, possibly alone and removed from any social interaction. Inside a tent however is considerably more comfortable. One can sit and talk with friends in a place that is protected from wind and rain. So why would anyone choose the former rather than the latter? The difference for the Psalmist was the presence of God. The psalmist so loved God that he wanted only to be as close as possible to Him, even if that meant standing outside.
Application
It breaks my heart sometimes to think of how comfortable I am in the presence of God. As a follower of Christ I have full rights to enter into the God’s house and share my heart and/or listen to His. But God is still King. No one would enter an earthly king’s presence as nonchalant and lackadaisical as I sometimes approach God. How in the world do I forget how privileged I am to be a child of the King?! One day with God is truly better than a thousand anywhere else. The fear and the wonder of reconciliation should be my constant companion. It is not for me to lean back and kick up my feet in the presence of God. Rather I must approach Him on my hands and knees understanding fully that I didn’t deserve this place I have… Jesus earned it for me.
Prayer
Break my heart again, God. I am not entitled, I am blessed! Teach me to approach your throne in humility and grace. I don’t deserve Your attention or Your affection, yet here I am in Your presence! I am overwhelmed by such a gift. Thank you, my King.
