Wasteful Worship

November 27th, 2008

 Scripture:
“When the disciples saw this they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked.” Matthew 26:8

Observation:
Though the disciples walked with you, saw you do miraculous things on a daily basis, heard your claims of deity, and even had entrusted their lives to your service they still had yet to worship you. They had a relationship with you, they sat at your feet to learn, they walked with you but none of them had demonstrated a true act of worship. Then Mary goes where no man had gone before, she takes out her alabaster box of expensive perfume and pours out a years wage on you in a matter of seconds. Like the blood of an unblemished lamb, Mary pours out her prized possession onto your body and an aroma as sweet as any spreads throughout the house and into the pages of history for us to see 2,000 years later. Mary displays her worship, admiration and love for You, her redeemer, her savior and her friend.

Application:
Anything spent at your expense is never a waste. Whether it be money, time, talents or any other resource, no matter what it is, when given to you it is a form of worship. I pray that I get this truth this morning. That doing your work is always worth it. (1 Cor 15:58) That worshipping you with everything I have is always worth it. Today I see that my life will never be in vain if I pour it out in worship to you.

Prayer:
God give me the faith, the passion, the admiration and the gratitude that Mary displayed in Matthew 26. She was so aware of what you had done for her, what you meant to her, who you were to all of creation. May you give me this awareness this morning. May I be constantly aware of your love for me and how you continue to demonstrate it in my life on a day to day basis. May sacrificial passion pour out of me daily and may my life be marked with the aroma of wasteful worship.
