The Foundation of Prayer – Chip Henderson
Key Passage: 2 Chronicles 29–31, 2 Kings 18, 2 Chronicles 31:20–21
OPENING QUESTION
When you think about prayer, do you tend to focus more on asking God for something or simply being with Him? Why do you think that is?
GROW
King Hezekiah was known for powerful, answered prayers in desperate times. But before he ever made those requests, he turned back to God in devotion. His life was marked by repentance, faith, and wholehearted obedience. Prayer was not just a crisis response for Hezekiah. It was the overflow of a heart fully surrendered to God.
If we want to pray with power, we must start with a foundation of desire for God Himself, not just what He can do for us. Through cleansing, trust, and faithful obedience, Hezekiah shows us how to prepare our lives for real connection with God in prayer.
- What stood out to you most about Hezekiah’s approach to God?
- Why is it important to want God more than what He can do for you?
- What does it look like to spiritually “clean house” in your life right now?
- Where is God calling you to take a step of faith instead of just believing in theory?
PRAY
Prayer begins not with a request but with relationship. Before we ask for things, we ask for God. Through confession, surrender, and faith-filled dependence, we position our hearts to hear from Him and experience His presence.
- What do you need to confess or remove in order to be fully present with God in prayer?
- Is there a place in your life where you need to cling to God more faithfully?
- How can we pray together this week as we start the 1-1-1 challenge?
CONNECT
You are not walking through P28 alone. As Hezekiah called the whole nation to turn back to God, we are called to pray together and encourage one another to keep seeking God day by day.
- What helps you stay consistent in your prayer life?
- How can our group support one another during this P28 prayer season?
- Who is someone you can invite to join the 1-1-1 challenge this month?
SHARE
As Hezekiah influenced a whole nation, your devotion can impact others. Living a life that wants God above all else opens the door for others to do the same. Your prayers, obedience, and faith can be a witness.
- How can you share what God is doing in your heart during P28?
- Who needs to hear that God listens to and responds to prayer?
- What is one way you can point someone toward trusting God more deeply this week?
NEXT STEP
Choose one action for this week in one of the Be The Church rhythms:
Grow: What Scripture will help you build a foundation for prayer?
Pray: What is your “one thing” for the 1-1-1 challenge?
Connect: Who will you invite to pray with you at 1 pm each day?
Share: How will you encourage someone to turn and pray this week?
Write it down. Tell someone. Follow through.
PRAYER
Close by asking God to help you want Him above all else. Confess where you have looked for answers more than presence. Pray for clean hearts, full trust, and faithful obedience as you begin this month of prayer together.
