Family Communion Guide

Helping Your Child Understand Communion This Christmas Eve

As we prepare to take part in communion on Christmas Eve, we want to help parents lead and guide their children in understanding this special time for followers of Jesus to remember what He has done for us—how Jesus gave His life so we could be forgiven and belong to God’s family.

Communion is a sacred opportunity to pause, reflect, and worship together. If you’re a parent, this can be a meaningful moment to help your child see what it means to follow Jesus.

How to Prepare Your Child for Communion:

  • Keep it simple and sacred. Explain that the bread reminds us of Jesus’ body and the cup reminds us of His blood, given for us so we could be forgiven and become part of God’s family.

  • Make it a moment of worship. Encourage your child to thank Jesus for His love and think about how they can follow Him each day. Communion is more than just a snack. It’s a way to remember, be grateful, and feel close to Jesus together as a family.

  • Talk about salvation. If your child hasn’t made a personal decision to follow Jesus, use this time to talk about what it means to believe in Him. We believe communion is for followers of Jesus, and we should to wait to take communion until they have a relationship with Christ. That decision to follow Jesus matters, and we want them to understand it before they participate.

We’re here to walk with you. If your child wants to talk more about following Jesus or taking a next step like baptism, we’d love to help.
