Winning the Fight Over Money – Chip Henderson

Key Passage: Luke 12:13–34

OPENING QUESTION

What is one lesson about money you learned growing up that has shaped the way you think about finances today?

GROW

Money is one of the most common sources of conflict in life. People fight with businesses, with family members, with spouses, and even within themselves over finances. But according to Jesus, the biggest battle over money is a spiritual one.

In Luke 12, a man asked Jesus to settle a dispute over an inheritance. Instead of taking sides, Jesus warned the crowd to guard against greed. Then He told a story about a wealthy man who stored up more and more for himself but ignored God. The problem was not that the man was rich. The problem was that he was not rich toward God.

Jesus teaches that winning the fight over money means fighting against greed, resisting worry, and choosing faith. True life is not found in possessions or financial security. True life is found in knowing God and trusting Him with everything we have.

  • Why do you think Jesus talked about money so often?

  • What stands out to you about the rich man in Jesus’ story?

  • How can greed subtly shape our thinking about money and possessions?

  • What does it mean to be rich toward God instead of simply rich on earth?

PRAY

Many people experience anxiety and stress about money. Jesus addressed this directly when He told His followers not to worry about what they will eat or wear. Instead, He pointed them to the birds and flowers as reminders of God’s care.

Prayer is where we bring our fears and financial concerns to God and choose to trust Him with our needs.

  • What financial worries tend to weigh on your mind the most?

  • How can trusting God change the way you think about money and security?

  • How can we pray for one another to experience peace and faith in this area?

CONNECT

Money struggles often lead people to isolation, secrecy, or shame. But spiritual growth happens in community. When we talk honestly with trusted believers, we can encourage each other to pursue wisdom, generosity, and trust in God.

  • Why do you think money can be such a difficult topic to talk about openly?

  • Who in your life has helped you grow in wisdom or faith regarding finances?

  • How can our group support one another in developing healthy, God honoring financial habits?

SHARE

Jesus reminds us that life is more than possessions. Our time, resources, and generosity can reflect our faith and point others toward God. When we seek His kingdom first, our priorities begin to shift.

The goal is not simply financial success. The goal is a life that honors God and stores up treasure in heaven.

  • What does it look like to prioritize God’s kingdom over personal wealth?

  • How can generosity become a testimony of faith to others?

  • What is one practical way you can use your resources to bless someone else?
